In the Katha Upanishad human existence is compared to a chariot pulled by five horses. The chariot corresponds to the body and the five horses correspond to the five senses.

The charioteer is equated with pure intelligence (buddhi) and the reins with the mind (manas).

The master of the chariot or carriage is atma, the individual divine soul.

The goal of human life is to recognize the lord of the chariot (atma) and to follow his inner instructions every moment.

The charioteer (buddhi) can thus steer the horses on the right path by consciously and tightly holding the reins (manas).
